The air was very cool this particular day; a breeze that smelled faintly of salt carried its way in from the ocean, tousling Delilah's lush, golden-brown hair gently about. She sat on a cold cement bench that lie in the shade of a tall cherry tree, holding in her hands a peach that her father had brought home from the market. It was lovely; it was soft and large and orange, and it fit perfectly in her palms.
Dressed in a creamy-white casual gown, Lila feared taking a bite, for never before had she eaten a peach; she did not know if it would stain when it dripped. Her mother would throw a tizzy-fit if she ruined this dress. Lila sighed and gazed about the garden; winter would be rushing up soon, and she dreaded the final days of warmth when the flowers would all recede into the ground and seek safety from the bitter cold.
Lila gazed at the peach, turning it softly about in her hands. What was it that her father had said? Oh yes. There was a seed in the pit of the peach; if she planted it right, it would grow into a lovely tree and in a few years, if her servants tended to the sprout properly, she would have her own perfect peaches. She glanced about, her pretty chocolate eyes searching, but for what? A servant, perhaps, to pry open the fruit? She wasn't sure, but she continued to gaze uncertainly about the garden.
